igus® manus awards 2015 open for entries26/01/2015

Polymer specialist igus® is calling all design engineers to submit details on their latest plastic plain bearing applications for this year’s manus® competition for a chance to win prize money of €5,000. The competition is open to companies worldwide and entries must be submitted by 20th February 2015. The winners will be announced during Hannover Fair 2015 in Germany, 13th -17th April.

High-performance polymer bearings expert igus has presented a prestigious manus UK award to Engineered Arts. This is in recognition of the company’s innovative use of polymer bearings within its RoboThespian humanoid robots. RoboThespian is fitted with iglidur® bearings on all rotating shafts, which has enabled its movements and gestures to be more fluid and friction-free, giving a convincing and human-like performance.

Record number of entries to the 6th “manus” competition.

The jury, which chooses the prizewinners of the igus-sponsored “manus” competition held every two years had more than ever to do this year. With no less than 437 innovative ideas for the use of lubricant-free plastic plain bearings being submitted, experts and academics had a tough selection job on their hands. The result was announced at the Hanover Fair.


The search was on for the 6th time for innovative applications that use lubricant and maintenance-free plastic bearings and stand out through their technical and/or economic efficiency and creativity.

For the sixth time now, plastic designer and plain bearing specialist igus GmbH, Cologne, starts the “manus” competition for plastic plain bearing applications. Since 2003 the competition has taken place every two years. Creative designers from all over the world are asked to submit their contributions to the competition. “manus” is a common initiative with academic partners like amongst others the Institut für Verbundwerkstoffe (Institute for composite materials), (Kaiserslautern) and the Fachhochschule Köln (academy Cologne). For the last competition which was two years ago more than 300 spectacular entries were received.

A new instrument designed by engineers and scientists at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC) has recently been shipped to the Atacama Desert of northern Chile for use in one of the European Southern Observatories Very Large Telescopes (VLT). The four telescopes when combined make one of the world’s most advanced optical instruments that allows astronomers to see details of distant galaxies up to 25 times finer than with individual telescopes.

igus, leading manufacturer of energy chain systems, cables and accessories, announced the results of the third global “vector award” competition during the Hanover Industrial Fair. The competition jury included representatives from the automation association within the German central association for electrical engineering and industry (ZVEI), the tooling laboratory (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen and TÜV Rhineland. The winners received their awards at a special ceremony. The “vector award” is officially under the patronage of the Robotation Academy of the Hanover Industrial Fair.

Worldwide energy supply competition starts for the third time01/11/2011

igus GmbH, Cologne, leading manufacturer of energy chain and cable now starts the third „vector award“ competition. Once again challenging and novel energy supply applications are sought for using cables and energy chains. The closing date is the 28th of February 2012. The prize will be awarded on the igus stand at the Hanover Fair (23.-27. of April 2012). A patron of the “vector award” is the Robotics Academy of the Hannover Fair.
