igus supplies and installs new energy chain system for Fort Augustus swing bridge

Fort Augustus swing bridge, a vital crossing on the A82 and a key link in the Caledonian Canal, has received a major reliability upgrade thanks to a new energy chain system supplied and installed by igus and BEAR Scotland

The 95‑year‑old structure operates in one of the UK’s harshest environments, facing extreme temperatures, constant moisture, and regular exposure to road salt. These conditions had accelerated wear on the bridge’s previous cable carrier system, which had reached the end of its economic life and was increasingly vulnerable to snagging, corrosion, and mechanical stress.

To address these risks, BEAR Scotland selected a modern igus energy chain solution designed to reduce costs and improve operational resilience. The new chain is securely fixed at the static end, eliminating the dragging forces that had caused premature wear in the earlier setup and is housed within a robust stainless‑steel trough to withstand moisture and salt exposure.

igus system that delivers steady cost savings over time through fewer inspections, extended service intervals, and reduced disruption. The project also supports sustainability goals by extending the working life of existing infrastructure rather than replacing major structural components. This approach minimises material use, avoids lengthy closures, and preserves a culturally significant asset.

Today, the new energy chain operates quietly and reliably each time the bridge swings open, an improvement that ensures smoother journeys on the A82 and uninterrupted passage along the Caledonian Canal. For BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland, the real success lies in what doesn’t happen: emergency repairs avoided, closures prevented, and costs that never arise.
