Plastic rods (also known as bar stock) and plastic plates make it possible to cost-effectively produce components and profiles for motion. Igus® plastic rods are suited for individual product series or prototypes. Plastic plates, hollow and round rods are made of a wide range of different iglidur® high-performance polymers.

The properties of each individual material make it a specialist for certain applications, such as an especially low coefficient of friction or high temperatures, food compliant and FDA approved, chemically resistant and high load. With the expert system for plastic rod the service life for plain bearing applications can be calculated online. iglidur® plastic rods and plates are used with great success in mechanical engineering, food and packaging industry as well as in medical laboratories and cleanrooms, to name only a few applications

In a tyre soaping station, metal bearings were used up to now, which regularly led to a breakdown of the system. Now, these bearings have been replaced with plastic bearings made of igus® plastic rods. This saves costs of several thousand Euro per year.

The "IceMole" is a melting probe, with which the polar regions, glaciers and as a long-term objective extraterrestrial regions are to be explored. For storing the ice screw, a component was needed that is water- and dirt-resistant and  thermally insulated. Therefore, a bearing is used that was made of iglidur® A180 plastic rod.

iglidur® plastic rod is used to manufacture a microscope arm for eye examinations. The reason: it can be machined to produce customised plain bearings down to sizes measured in μm to ensure the necessary precision for examinations.

Durable and wear-resistant plain bearings for finger prosthesis
This prosthesis is an electrically powered finger. The joint at the base of the finger is moved directly via a gear motor, which carries along the middle joint via a flexible connection. All axes involved in this movement are mounted through plastic sockets made of the material iglidur® J. Altogether, eight bearings are integrated in one finger.

The bar stock you can purchase from us is produced according to DIN EN 15860. The regulation DIN EN 15860 defines the requirements and testing procedures for the most important characteristics (e.g. thickness, width and length of plates, round bar diameter and length, permitted deflections of the bar stock) of bar stock made of thermoplastic polymers for machining.

Frequently asked questions

Round bar is used to manufacture turned custom parts such as bearings. bushings, circlips and washers. If the custom parts doesn't conform to the shape of the round bar, we have plate material to mill parts from instead.

We have a range of food-safe materials which have various properties such as chemical resistant, high temperature and blue colouring. These food-safe materials are available as round bars and plates.

igus materials are unique in the fact that each material is combined with base polymers, fibres and self-lubricating elements to create a blended material, depending on the makeup. Because we have a range of materials, some are more like nylons and PTFE than others so it is difficult to do a direct comparison.

This depends on the application. We have a varied range of materials for certain specifications such as high chemical resistant, high loads, low water absorption food approved and ESD compliant.
