More and more companies are turning to 3D printed parts in the automotive industry due to the flexibility of manufacture, the speed of the parts being produced, the cost reduction compared to traditional manufacturing methods and the long service life of the components. OptiAMix needed a solution for a plain bearing for the spoiler of their design and were looking for a lightweight automotive structure, so turned to 3D printing.
| Feature | 3D print | Conventional method |
|---|---|---|
| Cost factor | Low | High |
| Weight reduction | Excellent | Limited |
| Flexibility in geometry | Easy | Complicated |
| Ability to customise | High | Low |
| Delivery time | Quick | Slower |
3d printing is growing as a manufacturing method being used in the automotive industry thanks to the flexibility of design, the weight reduction the material offers, the wear resistance of the materials and the speed in which parts can be manufactured.
Similarly to the above question, weight is a big saving when using 3D printed parts. 3D printed parts are more cost effective compared to conventional manufacturing methods and because of that, it allows the design to be modified multiple times and re printed without it costing a lot of money.
It will allow more flexible designs to be printed. With conventional manufacturing methods, it can be difficult to produce certain geometries, 3D printing allows more freedom with the design.
Printing car body parts is usually no different to standard parts. Some of the larger items may have to be printed in two halves but as long as the correct material has been selected and the parts are tested, they can be 3d printed the same way as bearings and washers.
Absolutely. Printing car parts is no different to standard parts. Depending on the part will depend on the best material but as long as the parts are tested, there is no reason why 3d printed car parts should be an issue for the most part.
iglidur i3 was the choice of material for this application as it is a high wear resistant material
