In the modern electronics industry, semiconductors are at the heart of smartphones, computers, cars and machines. International semiconductor production is growing steadily as high-quality electronics find more and more applications and advancing digitalisation continues to drive demand. Production safety and the cleanliness of machines and systems are of crucial importance. A large proportion of production takes place in cleanrooms under extreme cleanliness requirements.

Cleanrooms place particularly high demands on the wear resistance of moving components. Even the slightest contamination can have a negative impact on products and processes - and therefore cause costs. Our products made from high-performance polymers are developed and tested with the utmost care in our own cleanroom laboratory. In addition, we subject them to further tests at the Fraunhofer Institute to confirm their cleanroom suitability. The result is an IPA-tested product portfolio with the best possible cleanroom classification (ISO class 1).

Volume pattern generator systems

Energy supply system for particle-free semiconductor production
Volume pattern generator systems are used by Heidelberg Instruments in industrial mass production. With these systems, it is possible to write microstructures directly onto wafers. Despite the continuous operation of the system, the energy supply must run absolutely smoothly in a cleanroom. The solution was the e-skin flat. In contrast to conventional chains, cables are guided in so-called pods.

Filling system for reaction vessels

Success for the customer: "There are various manufacturers of trapezoidal lead screw drives", reports Christian Baumann. "What we particularly like about this igus solution is the combination of the stainless-steel lead screw with the maintenance-free nut made of special plastic." The low coefficient of friction in dry operation and the glide surfaces of the screw drive are convincing in everyday life. Added to this are the lightweight machine elements, which in turn has a positive effect on the overall weight of the system.

Clean plastic put to the test

igus® is one of the leading manufacturers of cleanroom technology in the energy chain sector and has been successfully having its products tested since 1997. In order to be able to develop new cleanroom-compatible products more quickly, Fraunhofer IPA, as a development and certification partner, has now designed and realised a customised cleanroom laboratory with an ISO Class 1 cleanroom system in Cologne on behalf of igus®. The new laboratory enables the plastics specialist to carry out advance customer tests and new developments in the shortest possible time under real conditions.
